ETB Autocentres Urges Drivers to Put Tyres First as Snow and Ice Take Hold

ETB Autocentres is urging motorists to slow down, check their tyres and adapt their driving as snow, ice and freezing temperatures make roads across the UK increasingly dangerous.

With winter weather reducing grip and extending braking distances, ETB is reminding drivers that many cold weather incidents can be avoided by taking simple precautions before setting off, with more caution called for.

As temperatures fall, tyres are often the first component to be pushed beyond their limits -particularly if they are already worn, incorrectly inflated or damaged.

“Snow and ice expose weaknesses in tyres very quickly,” said Nikki McCluney, Head of Marketing at ETB Autocentres. “When temperatures drop, tyres that are already worn or underinflated simply cannot perform as they should. That is when stopping distances increase and control is lost.

“Tyres are the only point of contact between a vehicle and the road, yet many drivers do not check them regularly. As tread depth reduces, the tyre’s ability to clear water slush and snow diminishes significantly, which increases the risk of skidding and aquaplaning.”

Independent testing shows braking distances increase sharply once tread depth falls below 3mm, particularly in wet icy or snowy conditions. While the legal minimum tread depth in the UK is 1.6mm, ETB strongly advises motorists to consider replacement earlier during winter months.

“That final millimetre of tread might be legal but in winter conditions it can make a huge difference to safety,” added Nikki.

ETB Autocentres is encouraging motorists to carry out a few quick checks during periods of cold weather.

  • Check tread depth using the 20p test If the outer rim is visible it is time to replace
  • Check tyre pressures regularly as cold temperatures cause pressures to drop reducing grip and stability
  • Inspect for visible damage including cuts bulges cracks or uneven wear
  • Ensure tyre types are matched Mixing different tyre types on the same axle can seriously compromise handling
  • Driving on illegal or unsafe tyres can result in fines of up to £2500 and three penalty points per tyre but ETB stresses that the biggest risk is to driver and passenger safety
  • Adjust driving style for snow and ice

Motorists are advised to reduce speed increase following distances brake earlier and more gently and avoid sudden steering acceleration or braking movements. Using higher gears when pulling away can also help reduce wheel spin on icy surfaces.

“Winter driving is all about smooth controlled inputs,” said Nikki. “Good tyres give you a fighting chance but how you drive still plays a huge role.”

For drivers who regularly face cold wet or wintry conditions all season tyres offer a practical year round solution providing improved grip in low temperatures compared to standard summer tyres. Winter tyres meanwhile deliver maximum cold weather performance but should be removed once temperatures rise.

ETB Autocentres offers free tyre checks across its network helping motorists stay safe legal and prepared throughout the winter months.
